2019 Fall GASPA CONFERENCE

Learning to Lead Fearlessly 

November 11 – 13, 2019

The Georgia Association of Personnel Administrators is pleased to announce the 2019 GASPA Fall Conference on November 11 – 13, 2019 at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort.  A tentative agenda will be posted on our GASPA website soon.   

You will enjoy spending time with J. Cornelius George, our keynote speaker, as he presents Sine Metu’: Lead, Teach, Create, Learn & Laugh.  Sine Metu’ is Latin for “Without Fear”.  What is preventing you from being the leader that you see in the mirror, that person you imagine you are inside your head? This presentation will help you discover laughter in a whole new way.  You will leave energized and inspired to start being the creative leader you desire to be.  Cornelius is an educator, comedian, and radio personality.  He uses his many talents to empower and inspire people to find the humor and greatness that is within.  

Phil Hartley will be presenting an always-informative legal issues update.  The Professional Standards Commission will provide important certification updates.  Dr. Buster Evans, Executive Director of Teacher Retirement Systems (TRS), will keep us current on trends and changes in TRS.   GASPA’s Legislative Liaison, Clark Maggart, will give a Legislative Update.  From the GaDOE, Cindy Saxon and a state team will present an initiative, Advancing Inclusive Principal Leadership.  Dr. Gwendolyn Benson, Associate Dean, Georgia State University and deans from Columbus State and Albany State will present on The Teacher Residency Model, an option for preparing teachers applying all the research that supports preparing exceptional teachers who will not only be effective but will be retained over time.  

Kelly Coash-Johnson, Executive Director of AASPA, will   share what AASPA has been tracking with regards to the national teacher shortage. Learn what is going on in some key states good and bad. Kelly will share some key strategies districts and K12 HR teams can use to improve their recruitment and retention. Learn how to develop your own HR vision statement and utilize it best to reach a more diverse audience. Kelly will provide important information and tips for successful recruiting in her presentation, National Update on the Teacher Shortage and Vision Planning for the Future.    


Pre-Conference Sessions are planned and will include:  

1.  New Member Orientation will be led by Kim Clayton, Director of Personnel and Public Relations, Coffee County Schools and Valerie Suessmith, Assistant Superintendent, Henry County Schools.
2A.  Certification 101 will be led by Dr. Kelli Young, GaPSC Certification Division Director.
2B.  Investigations 101:  Who, What, When, Where, and Why? will be led by Kim Clayton, Director of Personnel and Public Relations, Coffee County Schools.  
3A.  Conquering the Juggling Act:  Strategies for Prioritizing Tasks & Empowering your Staff will be led by Dennis “Chip” Medders, Troup County Schools.
3B.  New to HR Q & A session will be led by veteran and fairly new HR colleagues.  

Breakfast will be available for those who attend the pre-conference sessions and a boxed lunch will be available for those who attend the third pre-conference session. 

Hotel reservations can be made online at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort.  Cutoff date when rooms are released to the general public is Thursday, October 10, 2019.    

Standard room rate is $145, Resort View rate is $145, Partial Oceanview rate is $160, and Oceanfront rate is $175.  There is a limited number of rooms in each category so reserve rooms early.

PLEASE NOTE:  Online credit cards payments are available.  Online registrations after November 1, 2019 will need to use the credit card option.  All payments by check must be received by November 1, 2019.  Online registration CUT OFF is November 4, 2019.
