Creating the Village: Developing a Culture of Collaboration
Presenter: Dr. Rachel Brown
Description: According to an African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child.” This phrase points to how children benefit from many caring adults who work together to support their needs. Public schools are uniquely situated to be villages where all adults work together to support all students. Despite this opportunity, many schools operate as confederations of independent teachers who shut their classroom doors and work alone. Recent innovations in school policy and practice have created opportunities for schools to become true “villages” that use collaboration to support students. Examples include Response to Intervention (RTI), Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and a Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS). Still, these collaborative models will work only if the teachers and other educators in each building truly collaborate and depend on each other to support students. This day-long workshop will describe and explain the essential foundations necessary to build and sustain a culture of collaboration in a school. Using data and examples of public health and research about the stages of change in organizations, this session will help participants to understand that effective problem-solving in schools requires collaboration. Participants will be able to use the knowledge and skills provided in this workshop to develop, implement, and evaluate student assistance teams.
Facilitating ELL Achievement through Prevention, Early Intervention, and Problem Solving Models: Best Practices for RTI/MTSS
Presenter: Dr. Craig Albers
Description: Identifying effective educational practices for enhancing language proficiency and academic success in the ELL population continues to be an urgent educational priority. This workshop will provide detailed guidance applicable to a wide audience of educators regarding how to integrate the core principles of prevention, early intervention, and problem solving models in their daily work with ELLs in grades K-12. Topics to be examined include (1) universal screening and progress monitoring procedures appropriate for use with ELL students; (2) how to identify and address critical ecological factors (e.g., SES status, educational disadvantage, mobility) that are pertinent to the academic achievement of ELL and non-ELL students; (3) core instructional practices, strategies, and considerations; and (4) supplemental intervention approaches and options. Each of these topics will be framed within prevention, early intervention, and problem solving approaches and can be used with ELL and non-ELL students.
