(You must have attended Day 1 here, or a similar John O'Connor training, to attend Day 2)
This workshop is designed for people who did not attend the Preparing for the Dyslexia Law workshop sponsored by the Georgia Dyslexia Collaborative held at the Oconee County Civic Center last February; it has been updated, however, to include the latest information on the Dyslexia Rule and HB538, the Georgia Early Literacy Act. It is designed to be a one or two-day conference.
Day 1: (December 6, 2023)
An overview of the Georgia Early Literacy Act, the Dyslexia Legislation, and the Science of Reading
Back by popular demand, this one-day training from John O’Connor will include an overview of dyslexia, the recently adopted state rule, HB538, and how to provide effective reading instruction beginning with Tier 1 instruction through tiered interventions. This is a repeat of last year’s Dyslexia Drive-Ins that John has repeated several times across the state. If you have participated in that training, at any location, you do not need to attend this day. If you have not, you need to participate before you attend Day 2.
This session will include the characteristics of dyslexia including breaking widely held myths. In addition, there will be a deep review of the 5 Domains of Reading and other elements of the Science of Reading. You will leave this session with 24 Big Ideas to Meet the Needs of Students with Dyslexia.
Day 2: (December 7, 2023)
(If you attended Day 1 at any time, including Day 1 of this workshop (December 6, 2023) , you will be prepared to participate in Day 2)
Preparing for the Dyslexia Law: Working with Your Team to Develop Strategic Steps
This day is designed for teams from schools or districts who want to analyze their current practices and develop strategic steps to improve Tier 1 reading instruction and to eventually build effective tiers of interventions for students with dyslexia. During this hands-on session, teams will dig into these questions and determine possible next steps:
--Are elementary students across the district or school consistently participating in high-quality instruction that is guided by the performance standards?
--Are the core instructional materials based on the Science of Reading -- those elements that research has indicated have the greatest chance of helping all students become proficient readers?
--Are elementary leaders deeply knowledgeable about effective reading/ELA instruction?
--Do elementary teachers have everything they need to provide high-quality reading and ELA instruction including the necessary knowledge, materials, training, and support?
--Do current intervention practices have a high impact on student learning while minimizing unnecessary paperwork and meetings?
Confirmed Guest Speakers: Dr. MaryKay Berry (Director of Student Services for White County Schools), Allison Funk (Director of Elementary Education, White County Schools) and Dr. Jennifer Lindstrom (Statewide Dyslexia Coordinator, Georgia Department of Education)
Before the sessions, please listen to the podcast entitled Sold a Story by APM Reports. It includes 6 episodes (less than one-hour each). It will provide you with critically important and powerful information. The link is below.
