2020 Fall GASPA CONFERENCE

Celebrating and Building Capacity in HR

December 7-9, 2020

The King and Prince Resort Beach & Golf Resort

The Georgia Association of Personnel Administrators is pleased to announce the 2020 GASPA Fall Conference on December 7-9, 2020 at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort.  A tentative agenda will be posted on our GASPA website soon.

You will enjoy spending time with Dave Weber, our keynote speaker, as he presents Leadership Redefined:  The 12 X’s of Success for Today’s Leader.  Leadership used to be defined by position or title, responsibility or authority. And while these descriptions may have worked in the past, they are far too narrow for the challenges facing your departments, teachers and students today. The time has come for a new kind of leader…a leader without a title. Through tremendous story-telling and interactive activities, participants will understand that every individual can intentionally bring about positive outcomes and have a profound influence on the educational experience of a child.

You will discover the secrets to inspire the team to overcome opposition and not let others pull you down, learn how to make progress in achieving your personal and professional goals, and consider new, creative options and get others on board.

Arthur Mills, COO of the New Teacher Center will be joining us.  He will share with us how thoughtful and strategic investments in human capital can have real economic benefits in addition to sustained improvements in student learning in his presentation, The Real ROI in Effective, Equitable, and Strategic HR Practices.

Phil Hartley will be presenting an always-informative legal issues update.  Dr. Buster Evans from the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia will be with us to give an update.  From the Professional Standards Commission, you will hear from Dr. Kelli Young who will provide important certification updates.   You will hear from Anne Marie Fenton and Paul Shaw, who with a panel of school district HR colleagues, will present Appropriate Use of Social Media:  Guiding Professional Decision Making.  Other sessions will include The Incredibles:  Keeping the Best, Building the Capacity:  Growing Leaders in Cobb, Substitute Teacher Education & Preparation Program, and Employee Engagement and Staff Retention.

Pre-Conference Sessions are planned and will include:

1.  What Every Leader Needs to Know About Succession Planning presented by Mike Moody.  Can the people who work in your organization answer this question, “What is the plan for replacing members of our department or office when someone retires, resigns, or leaves for other reasons?” Succession planning is the systematic process of recognizing and creating future leaders who are able to take the position of those who leave. It is a process that ensures an organization is prepared for the future. Succession planning is a major part of the work of Human Resources. This session is designed to present an opportunity for participants to consider a succession plan to prepare for future needs through looking at the process and basic tenants of succession planning.

2.  Practical Certification Tips for HR Leaders presented by Kelli Young, GaPSC Certification Division.   In this session, non-traditional pathways to certification, guidance on how to navigate certification rules and apply them to a variety of certification issues and situations will be discussed.  Participants will leave with a knowledge of certification basics and strategies for certifying uncertified teachers and tips for special situations related to teacher certification.

3.  Personnel Files presented by Dr. Kim McDermon, Chief HR Officer, Rockdale County Schools.  This session will walk you through what should and what should not be kept in a personnel file and will give you insight into steps to take to change from file folders to a digital format folder.
